Speakers discussed how the Democratic National Convention has engaged Black communities in Chicago and nationwide, highlighted the crucial role Black media plays in reaching Americans, and shared how Black media can cover the convention in person and remotely.
In attendance were members of the NABJ political task force, who had the opportunity to mingle with speakers and convention staff following the event. Throughout the fireside chat, the speakers highlighted the ways in which the Biden-Harris administration has delivered for Black families and outlined how Trump’s extreme Project 2025 agenda will be devastating for Black communities.
The event represents the Democratic Party and Democratic National Convention’s commitment to uplifting Black media and ensuring they get the access and information they need for their coverage.
Key Quotes:
“The contrast is going to be stark. You all covered the Republican convention. That was a convention built on fear…But this convention is going to be one built on hope,” said Jaime Harrison, Democratic National Committee Chair. “Y'all got a front row seat to Trump, this bigoted, misogynistic, racist guy…But what he did yesterday was also part of his plan, because he wants this campaign to be about race…He doesn't want to talk about Project 2025. He doesn't want to talk about the impact that will have in the Black community or the impact that will have on other minority communities. And we have got to call out the bigotry.”
“I'm really excited about making sure that journalists, especially journalists of color, get to experience this,” said Minyon Moore, Democratic National Convention Chair. “I've always tried to anchor myself in the values in which I was raised- to make sure that I see who's not in the room, not who's in the room. We see you, and we understand your journey.”
“Chicago has a history of hosting political conventions…We are making history with hosting the 26th political convention, our 12th DNC,” said Christy George, Chicago 2024 Host Committee Executive Director. “I'm so excited to be able to share our beautiful city with the 50,000 visitors, 15,000 members of the media, and those 5,000 delegates that are going to be here. We have such a beautiful, amazing, and incredible city and I can't wait to show off all of what Chicago has to offer.”
“We hope to welcome you back on the 19th through the 22nd so that you can utilize your platform to do something that no one else can do quite the way we can, which is to tell our stories,” said Keiana Barrett, Chicago 2024 Host Committee Senior Advisor. “We cannot leave that to anyone else. And so trust and believe that you have individuals that have been very committed to creating and inking a process embedded in inclusion, diversity, and equity, not just in words, but in deeds.”
